Getting started
What does Portrait Art do?
You choose one of hundreds of looks — portraits in charcoal, watercolour or oil, headshots, couples, friends and family together, you and your pet, travel scenes and more — and add a photo with your camera, your photo library or Files. Some looks ask for more than one photo, and a picture can include up to four people. An imagined baby is a fictional illustration made from photos of two consenting adults, not a prediction. The app creates the picture from your photo or photos using AI, and it appears in Works, where you can save it to Photos or share it.
Which devices does it work on?
Portrait Art is being built for iPhone, iPad and Android phones. It is not in either store yet.
Do I need to sign up?
No. There is no login and no email, name or phone number to give. The app creates an anonymous account for you the first time you open it.
Will the portrait look exactly like me?
Not always. Portraits are generated by AI, so results vary and may not closely resemble the person. The example images in the app were made from a fictional reference sitter and show the style of a look, not a guaranteed result. Only use photos you have the right to use.
Do I have to allow notifications?
No. Notifications only tell you when a portrait is ready. Everything else works without them.
Plans, trial and credits
Do I need a subscription?
To create portraits after the free trial, yes. Portrait Art requires a subscription to create portraits once the free trial (3 days or 3 trial credits, whichever comes first) is over. Browsing looks, viewing, saving and sharing the portraits you already have, and managing your account and subscription do not. Credits can be used during the free trial and with a plan; if a plan ends or is cancelled, the credits you have left stay usable until they run out.
How do credits work?
One portrait uses one credit; portraits that include two or more people (up to four) use two credits. What counts is the number of people in the picture, not the number of photos you add: you and your pet is one credit; a couple, a group of friends or an imagined baby from two adults is two. The app shows the cost before you confirm, and it never goes up afterwards. Credits are used only when a portrait is delivered: a request that is refused or fails uses none, and any credit set aside for it is returned automatically. Credits come with a weekly plan; subscribers can also add credits (below).
Do credits have a cash value?
No. Credits have no cash value and cannot be moved to another account. If a plan ends or is cancelled, you can keep using the credits you have left until they run out. Credits are lost if you delete your account.
What plans are there, and what do they cost?
Portrait Art has three weekly plans, sold as auto-renewing subscriptions through the App Store or Google Play. In the United States they are planned at:
- Bronze: $24.99 per week, with 25 credits for each paid week.
- Silver: $44.99 per week, with 50 credits for each paid week.
- Gold: $79.99 per week, with 100 credits for each paid week.
Prices may vary by country and store, and the prices in your currency are shown in the app before you buy. Subscriptions renew automatically every week at the same price until cancelled. There is no monthly or yearly plan, and Family Sharing is not available.
Can I buy credits without subscribing?
No. Standalone credit packs are not sold, and a subscription is required to create portraits. Credits come with the weekly plans, and subscribers can add more.
I have run out of credits before my next week. What can I do?
You have two separate options. Add credits is a one-time purchase for subscribers: 25, 50, 75 or 100 credits at your plan’s own rate per credit. It does not renew and does not change your plan or your renewal date, and it is offered only while your plan is active. Upgrade plan moves you to a higher plan, which gives you more credits every week from then on.
How does upgrading or downgrading work?
You change plan in your App Store or Google Play subscriptions; the app takes you there. An upgrade applies immediately: the store adjusts the charge under its own rules, your credits are kept, and the credits of the new plan are added once the store confirms its first paid period. A downgrade applies at the next renewal. Changing plan does not start a new free trial.
How does the free trial work?
A new installation starts with a free trial of 3 days or 3 trial credits, whichever comes first. It needs no card, and it is available once per customer: the app asks Apple or Google to confirm that the request comes from a genuine device before it starts.
The trial credits are given once, not per day: reinstalling the app or creating a new account does not start another trial. You can subscribe at any time, including during the trial.
What happens when the trial ends?
Creating portraits then requires a subscription. Choose a plan on the plans page. Nothing is charged when the trial ends.
How do I cancel on iPhone or iPad?
Open Settings > Apple Account > Subscriptions, choose Portrait Art and cancel.
How do I cancel on Android?
Open Google Play > Payments & subscriptions > Subscriptions, choose Portrait Art and cancel.
What happens after I cancel?
Cancelling stops future renewals. A period you have already paid for continues to its end, and its weekly credits are still added. After the plan ends, you need an active plan again to create portraits. You can still open the app, browse looks, and view, save and share the portraits you have. Deleting the app or your Portrait Art account does not cancel a subscription: cancel it in your store account.
I paid, but my credits did not appear.
Credits are added once Apple or Google confirms the payment, which is usually immediate but can take a moment. Open the Credits screen and tap Paid but credits missing? Check again. If a purchase is still being confirmed, the app says so and adds the credits as soon as the store confirms it. Checking again never adds credits twice. If they still do not appear, email us with your order ID.
How do I get a refund?
Subscription payments are refunded by Apple or Google under their policies: on iPhone and iPad at reportaproblem.apple.com, on Android from your Google Play order history. When a payment is refunded, the unused credits it added are removed, up to your remaining balance, and the weekly credits not yet added for that period are no longer added. Your balance never goes below zero.
Refused photos and failed portraits
The app refused my photo. Why, and was I charged?
You were not charged: a refused photo uses no credit. Before a portrait is made, an automated system checks that each photo fits the look you chose — that it shows a person with a clearly visible face that is not too small, cut off, covered, blurred or dark; exactly one prominent person where the look needs one; an animal for a look with a pet; an adult where a look needs adults; and two different people where a look needs two. The app tells you which photo was refused and why. Choose a different photo and try again.
I think my photo was refused by mistake.
The check is automated and it can be wrong. Email support@smartharmonyai.com with Portrait Art in the subject, and tell us which look you chose and what the app said. We will look into it. Please do not send the photo unless we ask for it. A refusal is remembered for one day, so the same photo is refused again without a new check during that time; a different photo is always checked afresh.
Does the check recognise who is in my photo?
No. It is not face recognition: nobody is identified, no photo is compared with any database, and no face template is created or stored. The Privacy Policy explains exactly what is checked and what is kept.
What happens if a portrait cannot be finished?
The credit or credits set aside for it are returned automatically, and the portrait shows Credit returned. You do not need to contact us. This also applies when our AI provider’s safety systems refuse a request, and when a portrait waits too long without being started.
My photo would not upload.
Check your connection and try again. If the camera, photo library or Files cannot be opened, nothing is charged; try one of the other options, or allow access in your device settings.
New phone and recovery codes
How do I keep my credits when I change phones?
Save a recovery code before you switch. In the app, open Account → Recovery code and tap Create recovery code, then keep the code somewhere safe, like a password manager.
On the new phone, install Portrait Art, open Account → Recovery code, paste the code and tap Restore account. The code you used then stops working, so create a new one. If that phone already has a Portrait Art account, it is signed out on that phone; save its recovery code first if you want to keep it.
I lost my phone and never saved a recovery code.
We are sorry, but the account cannot be recovered. Accounts are anonymous and the only way into one was on that phone, so we cannot identify it or move its credits to a new account.
Will “restore purchases” bring my credits back?
No. Credits belong to your Portrait Art account, not to your store account, so restoring purchases never adds credits again. Your subscription itself belongs to your store account. Use a recovery code to move your account and its credits.
Can I share a portrait?
Yes. A finished portrait is added to your photo library automatically (you can turn this off in Account → Photos), and you can also share it through your device’s share sheet to apps such as Instagram, Messenger, Facebook, WhatsApp or X. You choose the app, and your device hands the picture to it; we send nothing to those services ourselves. Only share pictures of people who have agreed to it.
Where are my portraits kept?
In the app on your device. We set no expiry on them there, but they exist only on that device: they are lost if you uninstall the app, clear its data or lose the device, unless your device’s own backup includes them. Our service is not a backup — our copy of a finished portrait is deleted within 72 hours after your device has saved it (after 30 days if it never confirms).
How do I keep or export a portrait?
Open the portrait in Works and tap Save to Photos to put another copy in your photo library (finished portraits are also saved there automatically unless you turned that off in Account → Photos), or Share to send it to another app or to Files. Do this for every portrait you want to keep before you uninstall the app, change phones or delete your account.
How do I delete a portrait?
You can delete a portrait from the app; copies you saved to your photo library or shared elsewhere are not affected and have to be removed there. Deleting your account in the app also removes the photos and portraits stored in Portrait Art on that device.
Photos and privacy
- To create a portrait, a reduced copy of each photo you add is sent to our service and processed by our AI provider, OpenAI. OpenAI’s models first assess automatically whether the photo fits the look — and can refuse it — and then create the portrait.
- We delete our copy of your photos as soon as the portrait is finished, or its credit is returned. Where a look takes more than one photo, all of them are deleted together.
- So that the same photo is not assessed twice, we keep a validation-cache identifier — a hash of the photo file, tied to your account — with the result, for at most 30 days (1 day for a refusal). It is personal data linked to your account, and it is deleted when you delete your account.
- On iPhone and iPad the app also looks for faces on the device and sends three numbers with the photo: how many faces, how large the biggest one is, and whether it is cut off. On Android it does not.
- We do not use your photos to train AI models, and OpenAI does not use them for training by default.
- No advertising and no tracking across other companies’ apps. Usage analytics can be turned off at any time in Account → Privacy choices; in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland it stays off unless you turn it on.
The full details, including what OpenAI may retain and for how long, are in the Privacy Policy.
Deleting your account
In the app, open Account → Delete account and data and confirm. You need an internet connection. Unused credits are lost, and deletion cannot be undone, so save any portraits you want to keep first.
No longer have the app? Email support@smartharmonyai.com with the subject Portrait Art account deletion request. We reply within 30 days. What we need from you, what is deleted and what is kept are explained on Delete your data.
Deleting your account does not cancel a subscription and does not refund a payment. Cancel the subscription in your App Store or Google Play account, or it keeps renewing; refunds are handled by Apple or Google.
