How to use wake windows

  1. Note the wake-up time. Start the clock when your baby wakes, not when the last nap began.
  2. Add the age-typical window from the chart to estimate the next sleepy period.
  3. Watch for tired cues — yawning, staring off, fussing, rubbing eyes — and start winding down before the overtired point.
  4. Adjust to your baby. Some babies do best at the shorter end, others the longer end. The right window is the one that leads to easy sleep and a happy wake-up.

Questions, answered

What is a wake window?

The time your baby can comfortably stay awake between sleeps — from waking up to being ready to sleep again. It gradually gets longer as your baby grows.

How do I calculate my baby's next nap?

Take the last wake-up time and add the typical wake window for their age. A 3-month-old who woke at 9:00 AM (75–120 min window) would likely be ready around 10:15–11:00 AM. Tired cues still come first.

Are wake windows the same for every baby?

No — they're general starting points, not rules. Every baby is different, and cues matter more than the clock. This tool shows typical ranges only and isn't medical advice.

My baby fights naps — what now?

Overtired and undertired can both cause nap resistance. Try shifting the window by 10–15 minutes and leaning on tired cues. If sleep is a persistent worry, check in with your pediatrician.
